Description:

The Model 1842 muskets were manufactured at the Harpers Ferry Arsenal from 1844 to 1855. They were the last of the smoothbore muskets manufactured by the U.S. arsenals, the primary arms of the U.S. Army in the Mexican-American War, and remained widely used during the Civil War by both sides, often after having been rifled. This one is marked "HARPERS/FERRY/1846" behind the hammer and the "eagle shield" motif over "U S" in front of the hammer. The barrel is marked with the "V/P/eagle head" proofs, has a bayonet stud on the bottom near the muzzle, and is dated "1844" on the tang. A brass blade front sight is on the front of the upper barrel band, and sling swivels are mounted to the middle band and front of the trigger guard bow. The stock has a "JAS" cartouche on the left flat, and the buttplate is marked "US." A collection marking is on the trigger guard bow. Includes a "US" marked locking socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with mixed dates (possible arsenal rebuild), fairly bright cleaned surfaces, some minor oxidation, crisp markings, a few minor dings and scrapes, and faint cracks visible at the tail of the lock and rear lock screw of the otherwise excellent stock. The bayonet has gray patina and minor pitting. Mechanically excellent.
