Late 19th Century Prototype Small-Bore Remington Rolling Block Rifle from the Factory Archive Collection with Remington Research Team Letter

The included letter from Roy Marcot of the Remington Research Team states that the "112" tag on the buttstock is from the Remington Museum/Archives and was listed in the 1920 inventory by Melbourne Chambers as a "Remington Military Rifle - single shot. .30-40 U.S.A. Cal, Small bore rifle manufactured in 1894 by R.F. Cook. First class condition." The inventory from 1948 by Crawford C. Loomis listed it as: "Model Joseph Rider Type: Rolling Block/Barrel length: 30-inches. Caliber: .30 Remington - measuring .301[inch] Disposition: (not retained)." Marcot notes that R.F. Cook was a gun designer for Remington in the 1870s-1890s and suggests the Loomis inventory is incorrect in its caliber listing as .30 Remington was not released until 1906 and suggests the true caliber may be 7.62 Russian. He also notes that the "not retained" note means the rifle was sold from the factory collection in 1948 and discusses the New Model Small-Bore Military rifles (Model 1896) and then Model 1897 Rolling Block Small-Bore Military Rifles. The rifle has a long blade front sight pinned to a base, a slotted cleaning rod, the Remington Arms address partially covered by the rear barrel band and handguard, a notch and folding ladder rear sight, no visible markings on the action, "112" factory museum inventory tag on the bottom of the buttstock, and military style curved steel buttplate. All of the metal components are finished in a high polish blue. Remington Rolling Blocks were used from the 1860s up through the First World War.

ConditionExcellent overall with 95% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish throughout, smooth oiled finish on the wood, some scattered light scratches and dings, and minimal overall wear mainly related to age and storage. Mechanically excellent.
