Description:

This is an excellent example of a late WWII U.S. Inland "T3" semi-automatic carbine that is fitted with an "M2" infrared sniper scope, power pack and battery. The M2 scope was originally developed in early/mid-1944 that was eventually fielded in late-1944/early 1945. It was designed to be used on the original WWII "T3" carbine and was actually the first infrared sniper scope developed by the U.S. military. These T3 carbine/M2 Infrared scope rigs were produced on an extremely limited basis with an estimated quantity of approximately 1,000 ever produced in their own serial number range. After WWII 99.9% of all these T3 carbines were demilitarized/destroyed by the U.S. government; however, a few examples did survive like this one. It has its original T3 receiver that is correctly marked on the side: "U.S. CARBINE CAL. 30/T3". The rear of the receiver is marked "INLAND/0702". These T3 carbines were specifically designated to use with the original M2 and later M3 Infrared Sniper Scopes. The primary difference between the M1 and T3 carbine receivers is that the T3 carbines were NOT machined for the standard rear sight and instead used a one-piece integral scope base that was brazed/pinned on top of the receiver. This design forced a relocation of the model number from the top of the receiver to the right rear side of the receiver, which in this example is marked: "U.S. CARBINE/CAL. 30 T3". When actually employed with the M2 infrared scope it was mounted on top of the receiver in this special integral receiver mount/base with the infrared emitter lens mounted on the underside of the forend using a special T3 designed stock. This integral scope base and special T3 stock were probably the primary reasons for the removal and demilitarization of the T3s as the later "M3" Infrared Sniper Scope conversion package could convert any "standard M1" carbine for use with the M2 or M3 infrared scopes and then could be reconverted back to its original M1 carbine configuration. The barrel is marked "INLAND MFG. DIV./GENERAL MOTORS/3-44". The receiver has the original one-piece mounting bar directly on top of the receiver, correctly brazed/pinned in place, and the front of the M2 scope has the correct lower foot that rotates and locks in place into the receiver, just like a Redfield/Leupold scope ring design. It utilizes two screws on the rear of the base (one on each side) to hold the scope in place and to allow it to be adjusted left/right for windage. The top of the scope has the small brass nomenclature plate that is marked "CORPS OF ENGINEERS, U.S. ARMY/SNIPERSCOPE M-2/ BELL AND HOWELL COMPANY CHICAGO, ILL./CORNELL DUBILIER ELECTRIC CORP. PLAINFIELD N.J.", and the side of the plate is marked "SERIAL NO./M-2 1078-50". This T3/M2 carbine rig is complete with the original M2 sniper scope with cables, power pack and battery, along with the forward mounted pistol grip assembly with base and infrared collector. It is also fitted with the original "IO" marked Inland T3 style carbine stock with the large, squared off, bulbous forend. The T3 carbine itself has many of the late WWII type components, such as the type two barrel band that lacks the bayonet lug, a blued, round M2 style bolt, a M1 style magazine release, without the small clip on the left side, an unmarked, parkerized, push button safety with a late production four rivet handguard. It does lack the small metal plate typically mounted on the left side of the stock above the pistol grip area. This scarce T3/M2 infrared sniper rig is fitted with an original GI "M3/U" marked flash hider and a blued M2 marked 30 round magazine.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% of the original parkerized finish overall showing only minor edge and high spot wear with a hint of finish loss on the receiver rail. The exterior of the M2 scope and emitter are both in excellent condition with 98% of their original black exterior finishes and the lens are intact. (No test of internal components for function). The special T3 walnut stock and handguard are both in excellent condition with only minimal handling marks. The complete scope rig is untested but it really looks like its in new condition. A really nice, all original T3 carbine with its early M2 Infrared Sniper Scope rig.
