Description:

In addition to the standard markings and features, the side plate has been inscribed "To/Brig.Gen'l Tanner/From his Staff/July 6, 1903". Per a set of notes and a vintage photograph secured under plexiglass inside the case lid, General Tanner is identified as Herbert Sandford Tanner, Commander of the Rhode Island National Guard. A jeweler by trade, he joined the Guard in 1885 as an enlisted man with the Machine Gun Platoon and worked his way up from there. Among other distinctions, General Tanner commanded the Newport Naval Battalion to suppress the Streetcar Riots (aka Fitzgerald's Rebellion) in Pawtucket in 1902, and would serve as a coach for the team representing New Jersey in the National Matches at Camp Perry. The case is hardwood construction, with a large open compartment that accommodates the revolver, green felt lining, a cartridge block, oiler, bore brush, two fired 38 caliber rounds (not confirmed as from the revolver) and a Farber pencil and eraser set in a silver clip-on housing with raised lettering "NATIONAL RIFLE MATCHES/CAMP PERRY, OHIO, 1908/ COMPLIMENTS DU PONT CO. MFRS OF EXPLOSIVES" on the front.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with 90% of the bright original high polish blue finish, showing some light spotting around the muzzle, areas of gray patina concentrated on the grip straps, bright edge wear and light handling marks. Vivid niter blue is present on the trigger and the back of the hammer. The grips are also excellent, with a few light scuffs and dents. The custom case is very good, with some removed dividers and mild wear. Mechanically excellent.
