Description:

This is an example of a WWII M1 Garand rifle that was manufactured by Winchester that was arsenal refurbished and converted into the M1D sniper configuration in early 1952. This is a very scarce configuration because when Springfield Armory did the conversion process 99% of all the M1Ds were assembled using original WWII Springfield Armory receiver. So to find an M1D produced on a WWII Winchester receiver is very uncommon and very desirable. It has the standard receiver markings of: "U.S. RIFLE/CAL..30 M1/WINCHESTER/1269574". The right side of the barrel is marked with "T (followed by) S-A-2-52" with the "T" indicating the barrel was targeted at the time of conversion, with the breech end of the barrel having a parkerized finish. It is fitted with an original GI issued M84 sniper scope. The scope has the original dull blue finish, data plate marked "TELESCOPE/M84/SERIAL NO. 33203" and it has its original rubber eyepiece and sliding sunshade. The rifle has a mix of original WWII Springfield Armory parts that is fitted with an original unmodified -9 SA operating rod. It has the late production wide base gas cylinder with a four-slot gas plug with a GI T-37 flash hider. It has a late post war all walnut stock and handguard set. The buttstock is stamped with a DOD cartouche on the left side with a circled "P" proof in the pistol grip area. It is fitted with a late leather cheekpiece that is stamped on the right side with "MRT/11-62".

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% plus of its original slightly darker gray, arsenal refurbished parkerized finish overall with edge and high spot wear with some light wear on the side of the receiver rail from hand cycling the action. The wood components are all in near excellent condition, showing minor handling marks with a nice all matching medium brown color overall. The stock cartouches/proofs are all original and are clear and distinct. The sniper scope retains 98% of its blue finish overall with minor edge wear with clear sharp optics. Although this rifle does not come with any CMP paperwork the entire rifle has the correct/original parts because they are all matching in color, so its not some put together rifle but an original GI arsenal refurbished M1D just not sold through the CMP. A really super, nice looking M1D sniper with an original M84 scope using a scarce WWII Winchester receiver.
