Description:

Manufactured in 1907. This revolver's factory letter lists it as a factory engraved and featuring the inscription "Guy G. Palmer USA" on the back strap. The letter also confirsm the barrel length, caliber, and finish, and indicates it had pearl grips when shipped to Captain Guy G. Palmer on February 15, 1907. Only 75 Colt New Service revolvers were factory engraved, and fewer than 50 were engraved with a person's name. The "B" coverage engraving was likely done by Cuno Helfricht. The majority of the engraving consists of broad scrollwork on a punch dot background. A circle, star and dash motif surrounds the hammer, the Colt barrel address/patent dates marking is inside an entwining line border, the caliber barrel marking is inside a banner surrounded by the scrollwork, a cross hatching pattern is under the cylinder on the left side of the frame, and there are floral blossoms and zig zag line motifs. The grips are carved in the Colt style with the large "COLT" logo at the top. Guy George Palmer (1867-1959) had over 30 years of U.S. Army service which began in 1889. With his promotion to major in 1915, Palmer became a judge advocate. While stationed in the Philippines, Palmer tried a murder case in 1902 and also made several maps of the area for the Army. His duties and accomplishments during World War I remain unknown at the time of this writing. However, he was promoted to lt. colonel with his last reported transfer to the 2nd Infantry on 17 Sept. 1916 and remained there when the unit became the 2nd Infantry Division until the end of the war. He retired as a full colonel in 1920. Palmer became a professor of military science and tactics at the University of California, Southern Division through 1926.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 70% original nickel finish with smooth gray patina on the balance. 50% original nitre blue remains on the hammer and trigger. The slightly shrunken grips are fine with limit age cracking, minor handling marks and attractive color. Mechanically excellent. This rare factory engraved New Service revolver inscribed to an identified U.S. Army judge advocate will make for a perfect addition to even the most advanced Colt or U.S. military collection.
