Scarce U.S. Navy Smith & Wesson 1899 Model Revolver

The U.S. Navy purchased only 1,000 S&W Model 1899 revolvers, which were delivered in 1900, and these scarce revolvers fall within the serial number range 5000-6000. The butt is marked "USN/[anchor]/38 DA/NO/156/CAB" and correctly lacks a lanyard swivel. "23", likely a rack number, is stamped on the back strap. Correct and proper grips numbered to a different revolver. Matching serial numbers are on the front grip strap, cylinder and barrel.

ConditionFine, retaining 70% original blue finish with the balance a mix of smooth brown and gray patinas. 90% original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger. The grips are very good with minor handling marks and blemishes in the checkering. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
