Description:

This Colt Model 1862 Police revolver with Hartford address and factory case was manufactured in 1861, the first year of production. The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel and five-shot fluted cylinder. The loading lever, frame and hammer are casehardened with vivid case colors. The brass trigger guard and backstrap are silver-plated, and the one-piece walnut grip has a high polish piano finish. The barrel has a brass cone front sight, and the hammer has border-less knurling on the spur. There is a capping channel in the recoil shield cut-out. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT-". "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. A small "P" is stamped on the left side of the barrel lug. The serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, backstrap and in one cylinder flute. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with a factory mahogany American style case with five compartments lined with dark green velvet. The case contains: (1) 250 count tin of Eley percussion caps with green label, (2) 100 count tin of Eley percussion caps with embossed markings on the top of the tin, (3) blued, straight leg, dual cavity bullet mold stamped "COLT'S/PATENT" on the top of the sprue cutter and ".36P" on the right block, (4) key, (5) combination screw-driver/nipple wrench, (6) pocket pistol powder flask with fixed charger embossed with eagle and shield and "E. PLURIBUS.UNUM" ribbon on both sides of the body and (7) five round packet of Hazard's combustible cartridges for "NEW MODEL REVOLVING POLICE PISTOL".

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel has 95% of the bright original high polish blue finish with some scattered flaking along the right side and several shallow dents above the wedge slot. The fluted cylinder shows no firing wear on the front or rear face and the percussion nipples are in perfect condition. The blue on two flutes has flaked and the cylinder retains 75% of the blue finish. Several of the cylinder safety pins are battered but all of the pins remain. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain 97% of the original casehardened finish with vivid case colors. The delicate silver-plated finish on the trigger guard and backstrap is tarnished and has begin to flake, but 85% of the plating remains. The grip is excellent and retains nearly all of the piano finish - handling wear is limited to a shallow dent on the left side. The serial numbers and the markings on the barrel and frame are crisp. The action functions perfectly. The case exterior is in fine overall condition with scattered handling marks and some old numbers impressed on the lid. The interior is in fine overall condition - the lining shows moderate fading with compression marks from the revolver and accessories on the bottom and some breaks in the covers on the partitions. The 250 count cap tin is empty but in excellent condition; the 100 count tin retains the paper seal and has not been opened. The bullet mold is in excellent condition and retains 95% plus of the original brush blue finish with a few handling marks. The screw-driver/nipple wrench is in very good condition. The powder flask is in very fine condition and retains 85% of the blue lacquer and gold-plated finish. The cartridge packet is sealed and in excellent condition. This is an excellent example of a first year production Colt Model 1862 Police Revolver with factory case and accessories.
