Description:

This mold is shown and discussed on page 44 of The History and Identification of "Colt Accoutrements, 1834-1911: Paterson to Automatic" by Robin Rapley and identified as "Paterson Carbine Armorer's Mold, 6 round balls, .525 caliber." Rapley states, "This is the Only known Paterson Carbine Armorer's mold" and indicates it was found in New England near Rhode Island and theorized to have been part of the contract from April 25, 1842, for 46 Model 1839 carbines for the Rhode Island militia. It has wooden handles with three light lines. The hinge pin has a domed head and peened underside. The sprue-cutter has a deep channel and funnels to each ball cavity. The sprue holes are larger on the lower cavities. Locating pins for the blocks an sprue-cutter are on the left side of the block.

Rating Definition:

Very good with dark brown patina and mild pitting on the iron, very dark aged patina on the handle ferrules, minor crack and small splash of black paint on the left block handle, general light dings and scratches, and mild wear appropriate to its age. This is a must have for an advanced Colt collection, particularly any collection containing a Model 1839 carbine.
