Produced using a 1960 vintage Walther P-38 pistol as the base, this kit has been set up to closely mimic the form and functions of the sidearm issued to spy, Napoleon Solo, in the classic 1960s television series "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." Custom built by MGM's prop masters, the original Solo pistols were designed to fire blanks only, and also integrated a full auto mode that briefly got them in hot water with the Treasury Department. During the peak of the shows popularity, fan mail was reportedly addressed to "The Gun", and an unnamed Army Ordnance official expressed interest in testing the item. The cornerstone of the modifications to the pistol itself consist of shortening the barrel and internally threading the new muzzle, bobbing the hammer, applying a black enamel finish and fitting a custom metal grip set. The threaded muzzle can accept a 6 5/8 inch barrel extension with forearm or a bird cage flash hider, and the grip acts as the mounting point for a Bushnell Phantom pistol scope and a folding, telescoping buttstock. All the aforementioned components fit into a Vanguard-brand plastic briefcase, which bears an "U.N.C.L.E." nameplate and also contains an extended magazine, an "11" badge, and a non-functioning Listo-brand mechanical pencil with an extending antenna. Included with the kit is a photocopy of a 2019 letter from the BATFE Firearms Technology Industry Services Branch, which examined the kit and it's contents; the pistol and stock were granted an exemption from the National Firearms Act (though still a "Firearm" per the GCA), but the inert silencer originally included with the set was confiscated, as it included an expansion chamber. Fine as custom fitted, with 90% of the black enamel finish, showing a few handling marks overall. There is a small amount of play in the grip, and the folding buttplate is without a locking device, otherwise the accessories are in good order. Mechanically excellent.
