Description:

Factory cased Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolver manufactured in 1865. This revolver was formerly part of the renowned William M. Locke collection and is illustrated on page 121 of "The William M. Locke Collection". This Model 6A revolver features a .31 caliber, 4-1/2 inch barrel, five shot, round cylinder, and round loading lever with navy type latch. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "ADDRESS COL. COLT/NEW-YORK U.S.A." in two lines. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene, "COLT'S PATENT" and the serial number. "31 CAL" is stamped on the right side of the frame behind the recoil shield. The serial number is stamped on the underside of the barrel, side of the cylinder and bottom of the back strap. The revolver has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and frame with fire blue trigger and color casehardened loading lever, hammer and cylinder pin. The one piece walnut grip has a varnished piano finish. The revolver is complete with a Colt American style mahogany case with five compartments lined with red velvet. The case contains: (1) 100 count tin of Eley percussion caps with green label, (2) L-shaped screwdriver, (3) steel screwdriver with turned walnut handle, (4) brown lacquer, pocket-pistol powder flask with gold-plated top and fixed charger embossed on both sides with eagle and shield above "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on a ribbon, (5) blued bent leg iron double cavity bullet mold marked "COLT'S/PATENT/H" in two lines across the top of the sprue cutter, (6) assorted .31 caliber lead balls and (7) key. Designed by Elisha K. Root, the Model 1855 Sidehammer revolvers were the only Colt percussion revolver with a solid frame. Approximately 40,000 Model 1855 Sidehammer revolvers were manufactured between 1855 and 1870. The William M. Locke collection was probably the most famous and extensive collection of American handguns ever assembled.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver is all original and retains 95% of the bright original high polish blue and vivid color casehardened finish. The barrel and frame have some minor edge wear on high points and there are several insignificant scratches on the back strap and the junction with the butt. The cylinder has 90% of the blue finish with light handling wear. The loading lever, hammer and cylinder pin retain 95% plus of the fire blue finish. At least 90% of the fire blue finish is present on the trigger. The one-piece walnut grip is in excellent condition and retains 95% of the varnished piano finish with some minor flaking on the butt. The cylinder retains 100% of the lightly roll-engraved stagecoach robber scene. The barrel and frame makings are crisp. The front sight is absent. The action is crisp and fully functional. The case exterior is in very fine condition with a hairline crack in the top of the lid. The case interior is in very good overall condition; the faded lining is clean with some oil stains and compression marks. The lining on the lid has been re-affixed. The Eley cap tin is in very good condition with complete paper label and most of the lacquer finish. The powder flask is in very fine-excellent condition; the body retains 95% of the brown lacquer finish with several shallow dents on the sides and about 80% of the gold-plated finish on the top and charger. The bullet mold is in very good overall condition with 80% of the dull blue finish remaining and crisp markings. The L-shaped combination screwdriver retains 80% of the dull blue finish. This is an excellent example of a factory cased Colt Model 6A 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolver that was formerly part of the world famous William M. Locke collection.
