Manufactured in 1898. According to records kept at the Hawaii State Archives, this carbine is listed by serial number as a Model 1886 issued to the Citizens' Guard of Hawaii. A copy of this document is included. The Guard was a militia used against royalists forces who opposed the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The 1895 counter-revolution in Hawaii was the last major military operation conducted by Kingdom of Hawaii loyalists. Around 500 Citizen Guards participated in the brief conflict that occurred from January 6 to January 9, 1895, and consisted of three major battles. Three years later Hawaii was annexed to the United States. The Guard was outfitted with Winchester Model 1876 and 1886 rifles, and records of many of these arms are kept at the Hawaii State Archives. For further reading see for example George Madis' book "The Winchester Book" (page 626). Both sides of the buttstock are stamped "HMP" along with the number "14". Based on included research complied by noted Winchester collector Lewis Yearout, "HMP" stands for Hawaii Mounted Police, a "sub-group" of the Guard, and "14" is the rack number. As retold in an accompanying letter, this carbine was found with 19 other Model 1886 carbines all having the "HMP" marking. Yearout purchased the carbine from Alan Parker of Parker Guns in Hilo, Hawaii. The carbine features a pinned beaded front sight, folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards, two-line barrel address legend, "45-70" stamped on the barrel at the breech, saddle ring mounted on the left side of the receiver, "-MODEL 1896-" stamped on the upper tang, two-line patent dates marking along with the serial number on the lower tang and carbine stock.

Very good. The carbine has a mottled dark brown patina. The wood is good with refinish visible on right side of buttstock, some surface chipping and minor dings and scratches. The stock markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. Truly a rare Winchester Model 1886 carbine documented to the Citizens' Guard of Hawaii with even rarer Hawaii Mounted Police stock marking.
