Unique and Rare Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with 1895 Musket Barrel and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1928. This factory hybrid Model 1894 is often referred to as the Winchester Model 1894/95 Saddle Ring Carbine by collectors. As explained in "The Winchester Model 94: The First 100 Years" by Robert Renneberg (see pages 52-53 and 60-61), these extremely rare Model 1894 carbine variations were factory built with surplus Model 1895 30-03/30-06 NRA musket barrels cut down from the original 24 inch length to 21 1/2 inches, rechambered to 30 WCF and fitted on a Model 1894 carbine receiver. They feature standard length magazine tubes as used on standard 20 inch barreled carbines. These carbines first appeared in 1927 after the NRA musket was discontinued in 1926. Renneberg accounted for "at least three carbines with 21 1/2 inch barrels [which] were definitely factory produced and are in existence." The barrel has a musket type pinned Marble blade front sight, a carbine folding ladder rear sight graduated from "0" to "20", the Model 94 legend followed by the 30 WCF caliber designation on the left side, and the two-line address on the right side. The barrel retains the front mounting hole for the musket rear sight, which has been factory plugged with a filler screw. Winchester factory oval proofs are present on the barrel and receiver at the breech. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The upper tang is stamped with the three-line trade mark information. It is mounted on a standard smooth walnut carbine stock. According to the consignor, this carbine is pictured in an article Rick Hill wrote for The Winchester Collector magazine.

Rating definitionFine. The barrel and magazine retain 70% of the blue, and the remaining surfaces retain 60% original blue finish with the overall balance a smooth brown-gray patina. The wood is very good with scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A desirable Model 1894 factory hybrid carbine missing from even the most advanced Winchester collections.
