Description:

Manufactured originally in 1878 as a second model with dust cover rail retained by a screw and thumbprint-checkered dust cover, set trigger standard markings along with British proofs on the barrel at the breech. Blade front, folding ladder rear, and tang mounted peep sights, and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate containing a four-piece cleaning rod. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration as well as receipt at the warehouse on 5 October 1883 and shipment on 10 September 1884. It also lists that it was returned to the factory and "repaired to carbine" on 18 November 1912. At this time the barrel and forearm were shortened and it receiver Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. This short rifle is pictured and described on page 224 of "The Winchester Book" by Madis.

Rating Definition:

Fine as factory reconfigured, retains 40% of the factory refinished blue, mainly on the barrel and magazine, with the balance a brown-grey patina. The wood is very good with minor dings and scratches throughout and a few minor chips and hairline cracks near the tangs. Mechanically excellent.
