Scarce Norman Wiard Civil War 6-Pounder Rifle with Carriage

There were only approximately 60 Wiard rifles manufactured in 1861-1862 at O'Donnell's Foundry in New York City from cast "semi-steel." Of these, around 24 of the 6-Pounders are known to survive, mainly at battlefields and historic sites. This one is marked "No 38" on the right trunnion base ring, "NW/NYC/OF" on the end of the right trunnion, "1861" on the left trunnion, and a patriotic shield motif flanked by arms holding hammers over a banner with "TO ARMS" and "U S/WIARD" on top, and it has a 2 3/5 inch rifled bore measuring around 48 3/8 inches long, a globe front sight, and Paulson Bros. Ordnance reproduction carriage. Relatively little is known about these scarce artillery pieces in actual combat though some are known to have been used by the First Ohio Regiment during the war as well as Dan Sickle's Excelsior Brigade, and they were used on Morris Island.

ConditionFine with a coat of black paint on the iron, green painted carriage, mild wear from storage and display such as some oxidation on the tires, and pitting under the paint.
