Description:

The sword features a 31 3/4 inch lightly curved blade with fine patriotic etching, including "The Constitution and the Laws." in Gothic script on the right. This phrase enshrines the fact that the Republicans and other Unionists believed the Constitution and the laws of the United States placed them in the right during the Civil War in fighting for the preservation of the Union and may be specifically referencing Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address during which he stated, "in view of the Constitution and the laws, the Union is unbroken." Or it may refer to the supremacy clause of Article VI of the Constitution itself which states: "This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding." Above the right ricasso in the etching is a "W. Blynn/Columbus/Ohio" retailer mark. William Blynn, 1822-1866, was a jeweler, watchmaker, and silversmith. The W. Clauberg maker's mark is on the left ricasso. The hilt and scabbard fittings are all gilt brass with fine martial and floral etching. The designs on the guard are cut on both the outside and the inside, and there is engraving on the inside near the base of the carved grip which has a cannon, balls, and border design. Columbia is among the designs on the pommel and the lower suspension band of the scabbard.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall with strong patches of original gold wash, bright scabbard body, fairly bright blade with minor edge and tip wear and some minor pitting, a chip at the edge of the grip, and mild overall wear. Overall a beautiful Civil War era sword in remarkable condition.
