Description:

The curved blade measures approximately 30 1/2 inches along the spine and has deep fullers, etched floral and martial designs that have been gilded, niter blue lower section terminating in scrolls, "Warranted" on the right near the ricasso, and an "N" or "R" on the spine. The silver plated brass hilt has a pierced guard and knuckle guard, the distinctive bald eagle head pommel, and a serrated bone grip. The scabbard is leather with silver plated brass fittings. The American eagle head pommel swords and sabers were especially popular in the early 19th century, both those made at home and imported from abroad. They are among the most attractive of all American edged weapons and are high collectible thanks to the wide variety, their connection to early conflicts such as the War of 1812 and Mexican-American War, and of course their patriotic designs.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with silver-gray patina in the front portion of the blade, 70% plus of the original niter blue, strong original gilding, distinct etching, some light pitting, mostly complete leather washer, 50% original silver plating on the hilt, minor age cracking and a chip in the grip, and aged patina on the silver and brass. The scabbard is also fine and has some crackling and flaking of the leather, strong silver plating on the upper band which is loose, aged patina on the silver and brass, small hole at the tip of the drag, and mild overall wear appropriate to its age. This is a very attractive sword from early America and will display well in a collection of antique American arms.
