Description:

The two models of Maynard carbines were easily among the best firearms available during the Civil War and were used and well-regarded by both sides. The Second Model was manufactured in 1864 and 1865. Some were delivered late in the war and were issued and used by the 6th, 9th, and 11th Indiana Cavalry and the 10th and 11th East Tennessee Union Cavalry. It has a "pinched" blade front sight, three leaf rear sight, Maynard patent marking on the left side of the frame, Mass. Arms Co. address on the right side, and government inspection marks, including boxed "AJN" and "JM" cartouches on the left side of the wrist.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine with 85% plus original blue finish, 75% plus original case colors, gray and brown patina on the balance, some minor spots of oxidation, and general minor handling and storage wear. The wood is excellent and gas crisp cartouches and a few scattered light pressure marks. Mechanically excellent. This carbine appears to have seen very little if any use and to have been carefully looked after for over a century and a half.
