Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Breech Loading Percussion Carbine

Manufactured c. 1863-1865. German silver blade front sight, "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO./HARTFORD CONN." marked ahead of the Lawrence patent rear sight, "NEW MODEL 1863" on top at the breech, "R.S.L." on the left at the breech, standard patent marking on the lock and action, saddle ring and bar on the left, and no visible cartouches on the stock. Bottom of barrel is serialized "c. 32423" which matches the receiver. A small "C" is marked on the right side of the lever latch. This carbine appears to have been a government rejected carbine. The breech block pin does not fit to the frame properly, the barrel alignment index mark does not line up, and the saddle ring bar isn't straight. It is possible one of these issues caused the carbine to be rejected.

ConditionVery fine with 70% plus original blue and 60% plus casehardened finish, brown or gray patina on the balance, minimal light spotting, and general minor storage related wear. The wood is fine and has moderate scrapes and dings and smooth oiled finish. Mechanically excellent. This carbine does not appear to have been use much if at all.
