Fine Civil War Burnside Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine

These carbines were based on designs by Major General Ambrose Burnside, best remembered for his disastrous defeats, famous facial hair, and for serving as the first president of the National Rifle Association. Approximately 43,000 of these "Model of 1864" Fifth Model carbines with the distinctive guide screw at the center of the frame were manufactured circa 1863-1865, and this example shows the standard markings and features.

ConditionFine with 50% original blue finish, 70% of the original niter blue on the lever and breech, 40% of original case colors, oxidation concentrated on the buttplate, gray and brown patina on the balance, and minor overall wear. The wood is also fine and has smooth oiled finish, minor dings and dents, some light scratches, and distinct cartouches. Mechanically fine.
