The 31 inch straight blade has a roughly 12 inch central fuller in the lower section, attractive floral and patriotic etching along the lower 2/3rds of the blade, and "Ames Mfg. Co./Chicopee/Mass" on the right ricasso. The gilded hilt has a spread wing/soaring eagle and wreath pattern crossguard connected to the knight's helmet pattern pommel by a gilded brass chain and a vertically serrated bone grip. The gilt brass scabbard has floral engraving on the obverse and "AMES MFG. CO./CHICOPEE/MASS." on the reverse at the top. A somewhat similar pattern antebellum era militia officer's sword is shown on page 149 of "The Ames Sword Company, 1829-1935" by Hamilton, and the pommel is the same pattern from the militia officer's sword on the previous page.
