Description:

Offered here is one of only about 200 high quality shotguns patented by Daniel B. Wesson on 17 December 1867. The patent was assigned to the Wesson Fire Arms Co. It is a matter of debate as to why the company was necessary as it had the same principals as Smith & Wesson. In fact, it is believed that the shotguns were manufactured at the S&W factory and finished nearby. The company only lasted for about four years and only produced around 219 shotguns. These shotguns sold for several times more than their competitors. One reason for the high cost was the exact fit required for the fit of the new action. The action was cut away on the sides so checkered wood pieces could be inserted, thus lessening the weight of the piece. The buttplate is another weight saving device. The metal center was cut away and only the "skeleton" inlaid around the edge of the butt, leaving the exposed wood checkered. The action was somewhat different from those used by other makers. The rear of the lever was lifted, removing a wedge from the rib extension on the barrel. This was similar to the system used by Remington on their first model shotguns seven years later. Damascus barrels with a single bead sight on a concave solid rib signed "WESSON FIRE ARMS Co SPRINGFIELD, MASS." Fine scroll engraving on the frame, hammers, trigger guard and forearm hardware. Initials are engraved on the upper tang. Many of these shotguns are said to have been engraved at the renowned Gustave Young shop. The engraving on this shotgun was most certainly done by a 19th century master engraver. Checkered round knob pistol grip stock with blank initial oval.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrels retain 60% of the Damascus pattern, and otherwise have a smooth gray patina mixed with some light pitting. Strong amounts of vibrant original case colors remain on the frame under and around the hammers and on the water table. The engraving is crisp. The refinished wood is also very good with a few repairs, recut checkering and some minor handling marks. A very scarce antique shotgun missing from even the most advanced sporting or S&W collections. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
