Alvin A. White was one of the greatest arms engravers of the 20th century, arguably one of the best traditional engravers in American history. In addition to the engraved Colt handguns he is famous for, he also hand-crafted and engraved a limited number of fine traditional percussion and flintlock muzzle loaders like this one. The rib has a gold bead front sight and "A. A. WHITE 72 VERNDALE AVE. ATTLEBORO, MASS." The trigger guard tang, forend, and bottom of the barrels have "59," and "410" is also on the bottom of the barrels. The breech plugs, upper tang, and locks are casehardened and have English style scroll and border engraving as does most of the remaining blued components. The rib on the breech has dual gold bands. The forend has lightly engraved gold wedge escutcheons, and the bolsters have floral engraved gold plugs. The locks have "A.A. WHITE" on gold banners towards the front, and the stock flats have gold tear drop inlays. The stock also has fine checkering on the forend and wrist, a gold initial escutcheon on the bottom of the butt, and a 13 3/4 inch length of pull. Very fine with bright original gold, 75% original blue on the furniture, subtle original case colors and gray and brown patina on the casehardened components, a gray-brown blend along the barrels, oxidation and pitting concentrated near the breech, and crisp markings and engraving. The stock is very fine and has crisp checkering, smooth finish, attractive grain, and a few minor scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent. The accessories are good and have moderate age related wear.
