Description:

This design is pictured on page 352 of "Steel Canvas: The Art of American Arms" by R.L. Wilson with the caption: "Bowie knife by Tiffany & Co., celebrating the California Gold Rush, commissioned by the author; executed in silver, gold, and gold quartz; the blade (by the legendary Buster Warenski) of etched and engraved steel. The first arms design by the Corporate Division's Ward Kelvin, and believed the first Tiffany & Co. Bowie since Theodore Roosevelt's commission of c. 1884." It was designed by Kelvin at Tiffany & Co. and crafted by renowned Master Engraver Alvin White. The blade is 11 inches from the tip to the hilt and has "Gold Seeker's Protector" on the right side and the "Them Thar Hills" scene (as it is called in the sketch) on the left side. The handle design was originally meant to be gold but is silver and is in the shape of a prospector panning for gold and has two specks of gold in the pan. The silver guard has inset gold vein quarts and is inscribed: "Designed by Tiffany & Co for R. Larry Wilson" on the left. The left side of the sheath has Wilson's monogram.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine as custom made overall with minimal handling and storage wear. The blade exhibits scuffing from the sheath as a result of repeated removal. This is an absolutely stunning Bowie knife in and of itself made all the more valuable and desirable by its documented design from Tiffany & Co.
