Well-Documented Alvin A. White Master Engraved and Silver Mounted Flintlock Pistol from the White Collection

On page 294 of "Steel Canvas: The Art of American Arms" by Wilson, the pistol is in the foreground and Alvin Alexander White is holding another flintlock pistol from the White collection in this auction. This pistol and two other flintlock pistols in the auction are also pictured on page 295, and all are identified as "made from scratch" by White, "the dean of American arms engravers." The pistol is also pictured on page 328 of the same book. He is best known for his engraved Colts, but White clearly had an affinity for earlier antique arms and wares, and the engraving patterns from earlier firearms influenced his engraving style. The outside of the lock is signed "A A White," and the barrel is signed "A.A.W." This pistol would not be out of place in a collection of antique arms. The rifled, two-stage, brass barrel has a silver blade front sight, the noted initials on top, and scroll engraving. The upper tang is engraved and has a "dished" rear sight. The lock also has scroll engraving in addition to the signature. The ramrod ferrules, side plate, trigger guard, wrist escutcheon, and pommel cap are all silver. The side plate is engraved with an attractive display of arms and a finely detailed bald eagle. The trigger guard and escutcheon have floral engraving. The cap is engraved similar to the classic cast grotesque masks popular on many Georgian flintlock pistols. The stock has attractive flame figure, nicely sculpted flats, and raised shell carving by the barrel tang. Provenance: The Alvin White Collection

ConditionVery fine an attractive "antiqued" appearance throughout, light aged patina on the brass barrel, gray patina and light oxidation on the lock, attractive tarnish on the silver, distinct markings and engraving patterns, attractive figure along the stock, minor dings and scratches that give it a very genuine antique appearance, and mild overall wear.
