Alvin A. White is probably best known for his masterful engraving of Colt firearms, however, those only display a small fraction of his artistic talent. White is also highly regarded for his scrimshaw, sculpture, gun making, jewelry making, carving, and restoration. Thus, in many ways, listing Mr. White as only a Master Engraver is selling his artistic talent short. This handmade miniature musket is an excellent example of a combination of many of these talents. The three-stage cannon barrel is brass and lightly engraved at the breech along with White's "A.W." signature and the rest of the metal is bright including the lock, trigger guard, and buttplate, which are also lightly engraved with floral scroll. This miniature musket is pictured, along with a couple of White's other masterful pieces that are available in this auction, on page 296 of "Steel Canvas The Art of American Arms" by Wilson.
