Alvin A. White's artistic talents seem to have known no bounds, encompassing engraving, sculpture, carving, jewelry making, gun making, and scrimshaw. Though he is probably most widely known for his masterful engraving of firearms, especially those manufactured by Colt, this miniature is a fine example of some of his other work, combining many of his talents. The swamped barrel (caliber measuring at .12) is marked "LONDON" along with White's miniscule "AW" signature and two British style proofs. It features light floral engraving on the lock plate, floral patterned side plate and wrist escutcheon, and a grotesque mask pommel, all of which have been hand crafted and fitted by White. This miniature flintlock pistol is pictured, along with a couple of White's other masterful pieces that are available in this auction, on page 296 of "Steel Canvas The Art of American Arms" by Wilson.
