Alvin A. White Engraved Flintlock American Long Rifle with from the White Collection with Stock Identified as Cut from Wood from a Cherry Tree Near His Childhood Home

An included document signed "Al White" indicates this was the only rifle he built from the wood salvaged from a black cherry tree located near his childhood home in Attleboro. It also notes that he shot it and also made three fowling pieces from the wood of the same tree. White was a die cutter prior to World War II and was a well-known engraver for Colt firearms following the war and was dubbed the "dean of American arms engravers." His arms have been owned by American and foreign leaders and are represented in some of the U.S.'s most prestigious museums. The rifle is signed "AAW" on top of the breech section and has a "WARRANTED" marked lock, fine engraving on the patch box, toe plate, the four silver inlays on the left side of the stock, and the silver wrist escutcheon; silver wire inlays, silver ramrod ferrules, and a smooth stock with plain brass forend cap, trigger guard, and buttplate. Provenance: The Alvin White Collection

ConditionFine with dark bluish-brown on the barrel and lock, oxidation concentrated on the lock, aged patinas on the brass and silver, crisp marking and engraving, and general mild wear. The stock is very fine and has some mild wear near the breech and a few minor handling and storage marks. Mechanically fine. This is a very interesting rifle with a personal connection to White's childhood.
