French & Indian War Era Pair of Silver Mounted James Freeman Flintlock Pistols from the White Collection

A) Freeman Flintlock Pistol

James Freeman and his son of the same name were active in the London gun trade and operated from 1705 to 1782. This pair would have been made under the son during the Seven Years War/French & Indian War. The London silver hallmarks date to 1759 (script "D") and suggest the mounts were crafted by Jeremiah Ashley (script "J.A"). The locks are signed "FREEMAN" in a banner, and the two-stage, smoothbore barrels have "LONDON" on top and London proof and view marks. The furniture is silver and has floral and scroll designs, and the pommel caps are the classic Georgian grotesque masks. Provenance: The Alvin White Collection

ConditionFine with mottled gray and brown patina on the lock and barrel, attractive natural aged patina on the silver, mostly distinct markings and engraving other then the view mark on the barrel, minor pitting, and general mild wear. The stock is also fine and has a repair at the forend tip, distinct carving, and mild scrapes and dings. Mechanically fine.
