Description:

The Springfield Armory only manufactured 4,021 of these distinctive dual purpose weapons in 1855-1857. They are one of only three handguns manufactured at Springfield. They were intended to provide the U.S. Cavalry and Dragoon regiments with weapons that could be used as carbines for dismounted action and as pistols for use on horseback. They are known to have been used into the Civil War, including by Confederate forces. This "1855" (tang and lock) dated example has the standard markings and features. The stock is numbered "13" while the pommel cap has "9." It is pictured on page 103 of "The Stagecoach Museum Gun Collection" where the "177" tag on the gun is shown.

Rating Definition:

Fine with crisp metal and markings, mostly gray and brown patina on the iron along with some mild pitting and splashes of varnish, aged patina on the brass, and general mild wear. Hammer screw is a period replacement. The stocks have crisp edges, moderate scattered scrapes and dings, and a series of notches on the comb of the shoulder stock. Mechanically fine.
