Dating to circa 1810, this pistol is signed “I. GILL” on the lock, almost certainly for John Gill of Birmingham (1802-1817). The swamped octagonal browned barrel has a blade type front sight, dovetailed back sight, Tower private proof marks, the barrelsmith’s mark “B&S” and engraved with a band of foliage at the breech. Foliate engraved false breech and flat bevelled detented lock with single set trigger mechanism. Figured walnut full length stock fitted with a white metal initial oval at the wrist, engraved iron mounts including trigger guard with pineapple finial, and brass tipped wooden ramrod.

Good. The barrel retains half of the faded older rebrowned finish, some scattered light pitting throughout. Lock has a dark patina with clear signature. Stock has been refinished, some minor age related storage and handling marks throughout, a small patch of glue evident above the tail of the lock, and a small setting crack between the rear side nail and the breech opposite the lock. Mounts with a dark patina. Mechanically very good.

The pair in an associated relined and refitted mahogany case, the lid with reproduction trade label for Ketland & Co., and with accessories including brass mounted loading rod with worm, iron pincer type bullet mold, and brass mounted copper three-way powder flask. The exterior of the case with flush-fitting brass carrying handle and circular brass escutcheon.

Good. In comparable condition with “A” with slightly stronger browned finish remaining to the barrel. In addition to the small crack between the rear side nail and the breech opposite the lock, the stock has a small insert repair to the left side of the forearm tip. Mechanically very good. The case is generally in good condition with some handling and storage marking and wear to the exterior. The area around the lock is chipped, the upper portion of the cock is replaced, and the lock escutcheon is missing from the front of the case. Minor wear to the baize lining.
