Documented Unusual Engraved, Silver and Gold Inlaid, and Carved Stiegele of Munich Percussion Drilling Combination Gun

This interesting drilling is pictured and discussed in the article "A Stiegele Percussion Double Rifle Drilling" by Hummel and Ehlert in the Journal of the German Gun Collectors Association (see their website) and called "Fit for a King!" The rear ramrod pipe has "1860" in a banner which is probably the year of manufacture. It was likely manufactured by another gunmaker for Carl Anton Stiegele of Munich, a gunmaker to the Bavarian royal family and court. The gun is set up in an unusual combination for a drilling: an upper traditional .54 caliber rifled barrel, lower left .54 caliber "straight rifled" barrel, and lower right 16 gauge smoothbore barrel. This would certainly make for a versatile hunting gun. Since the top barrel is fired with the right trigger, and the other rifled barrel is fired with the left trigger, both of the triggers are single set. As noted in the above article, the right hammer was formed and engraved so well that it is difficult to tell until close inspection that the nose rotates down to fire lower right barrel. The barrel group can be taken down by removing the screw ahead of the trigger guard. The upper barrel has a blade front sight on a ramped base, drift adjustable notch rear sight, "Stiegele in Munchen" in gold inlay on top, and a silver floral and scroll inlay on top at the breech. All three barrels are Damascus and have silver inlays at the breech. The bolsters/breech plugs are also finely engraved with scrollwork. The locks have rope border designs, scroll work, a chamois in an alpine scene on the right, and a reposed hind in a pastoral scene on the left. The upper tang has a bust of a dog and a folding peep sight. The trigger guard has scroll engraving and a scroll pattern horn grip extension. The cap box has a detailed alpine scene with a hunter posing with his gun. The buttplate is engraved with complimentary patterns. The stock has attractive natural grain, incised scroll carving with textured backgrounds, and a stag in a wooded scene on the left behind the large cheek rest.

ConditionFine with bright original gold inlays, aged patina on the silver inlays, crisp engraving, mostly a mix of gray and brown patina throughout, light Damascus patterns visible along the barrels, some patches of mild oxidation/pitting, and general mild age and storage associated wear. The stock is also fine and has crisp checkering, attractive grain, minor checks, a repair at the toe, and even finish. Mechanically excellent. This is a very impressive and rather unique percussion drilling and was likely a prized hunting gun of a member of a European royal court. As the article noted, it is "Fit for a King!"
