Very Fine Cased Pair of Engraved and Carved Percussion Dueling Pistols by Cordier of L'Ile St. Denis

A) Percussion Dueling Pistol

The locks have "CORDIER A/L'ILE S. DENIS" in banners at the tail and leafy scroll engraving. The same engraving extends to the other furniture, including the trigger guards which have intricate pierced scroll accents. The barrels have dovetailed bead style front sights, fluted mid-sections, a geometric and scroll engraving. The bottom of the barrels/breeches have "11.4" and "CE (conjoined)/1/*/C/54/1/54/1851." The latter is the year of manufacture. The breech plugs and upper tangs have seamless scroll engraving along with gold inlaid "1" and "2" respectively and fixed notch rear sights on the latter. The inside of the forends have "JNI" (the stock maker's initials). These same initials are found on many fine percussion target and dueling pistols from the late 1840s and early 1850s that have fluted wrists and detailed carving like the stocks on this pair. The stocks have a mix of shell and leafy scroll patterns that coordinate nicely with the engraving on the metal. The case is marked "CORDIER/ISLE ST. DENIS." in gold ink inside the lid and has engraved brass fittings including a central inlay inscribed with the initials "A.D." The interior is fitted to the pistols and the accessories, many of which are made largely of horn. The accessories are: a cleaning rod, two containers, a mallet, an engraved ball mold, small measure, combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, ball puller, and ramrod. Also inside one compartment is a note reading: "COUNT ANDRE DE VOSELLE/CHATEAU LA PREE/ISSOUDOW INDRE/FRANCE" suggesting it might have been part of the collection of that historic chateau.

ConditionVery fine with 95% plus original dark blue finish, mostly smooth gray on the balance, patches of slight spotting, crisp engraving and markings, and minor handling and storage marks. The stock is also very fine and has crisp carving and a few minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has mild storage wear along with some pieces absent and some cracks in the lid. The accessories are mostly very fine and have minor age and storage related wear.
