Description:

The locks have "ZAUOE A MARSEILLE" in gold inlay along the bottom, and the breech plugs and upper tangs have "1" (A) and "2" (B) in gold inlay. The barrels have attractive flutes that pair well with the fluted wrists of the stocks, and the metal components aside from the barrels also have attractive floral and scroll engraving that coordinate well with the interlaced scroll carving on the stocks. Dovetailed blade front sights are fitted to the barrels, and the upper tangs have fixed notch rear sights. The triggers are plain but have pretty light pulls. "2928" is marked on the bottom of the barrels and breeches as well as the breech faces, and the bottom of the barrels also have Casimir Lefaucheux's maker mark as well as "GB" (twice) and "11.0." "JNI" is marked inside the forends. This stock carver was apparently a prolific maker of stocks of this type and their initials are found on many French pistols from the mid-19th century, including multiple other pairs in this auction. The case has "ZAOUE/FCANT D'ARMES BREVETE/ENTREPOT/A MARSEILLE" inside the lid and is closely fitted to the pistols, the included ramrod, mallet, combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, ball mold, horn powder flask, cap container, and cleaning rod, and a worm which is in the covered compartment.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 95% plus original blue finish, mostly smooth gray on the balance, bright gold inlays, crisp engraving, and generally minor age and handling related wear including some light spotting. The stock is very good and has a couple of slight hairline cracks, crisp carving, and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The case is good and has moderate storage wear including some crisp and partially loose borders, crazed finish, and cracks. The accessories are very good and have some minor storage wear such as minor oxidation and light scratches.
