Description:

The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 6 inch barrel in .44 Russian, blue finish and checkered walnut grips when shipped on June 27, 1890, and delivered to the U.S. government, Springfield Armory. The revolver is listed by serial number in Supica and Hahas' "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" (page 106) and an included article in "The Gun Report" by Scott Meadows as a New Model No. 3 issued to the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service. Around 140 Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 revolvers were purchased for the Revenue Cutter Service, the predecessor of the Coast Guard, between 1890 and 1894. The barrel has been renumbered to the gun (likely factory). Matching serial numbers are on the butt, right grip panel, cylinder, and barrel latch.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 50% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. The grips are very good with minor dings and scratches and moderately worn checkering. Mechanically excellent. A scarce and desirable New Model No. 3 revolver documented as issued to the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service.
