Description:

This is a desirable example of a WWII M1C Garand sniper rifle manufactured by Springfield Armory in March 1945, then reconfigured into an M1 rifle in 1952, (top rear receiver flat marked SA-52) then reactivated into a MC-1 sniper rifle which has been fitted with the second pattern Griffin & Howe USMC MC-1 type sniper scope mount. It is estimated during WWII Springfield manufactured approximately 4,000 M1C sniper rifles with most being refurbished before or during the Korean War and with hundreds provided to NATO allies in the 1960s and hundreds more destroyed in the 1980/90s. Following the Korean War, the Marine Corps adopted the new/improved Stith Kollmorgen MC-1 4X telescopic sight with the larger Griffin & Howe mount fitted with one-inch rings to accommodate the M1C sniper rifles. The Marines designated these rifles as the "1952 Sniper Rifle" and issued them in limited numbers from 1954 through 1967. All of the verified USMC 1952 MC-1 Sniper Rifles are built using original Springfield Armory Korean War rebuilds such as this rifle. The top of the scope tube is marked "MC 379-P", and the rear eye-piece is factory marked: "4X DOUBLE/STITCH MOUNTINGS S.A.TEX", with "KOLLMORGEN OPTICAL CORP. BROOKLYN NY." on the second line. The scope is fitted with the larger windage and elevation knobs that produce an "audible click". It's fitted with a fine cross-hair reticle, and it has its original high polish blue/black finish. The scope mount is marked: "GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK/PAT. #1.856,549 MAY 3, 1932", with its original, 1 inch, full split rings with the later MC-1 round end locking levers. The rifle has standard receiver markings over serial number "3638516". The left side is fitted with an unmarked M1C type scope bracket (base) secured with three new, screws and two new taper pins. The barrel has a single "P" firing proof and it stamped "S A 2-53" with the breech in the white. The rifle retains a mix of WWII and early post-war SA marked parts with a wide base gas cylinder, round top "M" marked gas cylinder lock and a four slot gas plug. It is fitted with an unmarked walnut stock and handguard set, with no proofs or cartouches. The rifle is fitted with an original WWII, "K-LINE" marked, leather cheekpad. This rifle also comes with a green web sling, and a reproduction "XM-2" marked M1C type flash hider.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% of a light gray/green arsenal refurbished parkerized finish overall, edge and high spot wear, finish loss on the right side receiver rail, and the operating rod turning a light brown patina color. The stock and handguard are both in fine plus condition with a medium brown color overall showing only minor handling marks on the stock and some heavier pressure dents on top of the rear handguard. The G&H scope mount retains 95% of its light gray/green parkerized finish while the scope retains 90% of its black exterior finish with wear and finish loss on the scope tube, top of the knobs and ocular end. The optics are clear with an intact reticle; however, the optics are out of focus.
