Description:

This very fine World War I U.S. Remington Model 10 trench gun was manufactured in 1918. The Remington Model 10 trench guns were made in limited quantities by Remington-UMC and are considered by experts to be the "rarest, most elusive" U.S. military shotgun. This Remington Model 10A pump shotgun has a 23-inch, 12 gauge, cylinder bore barrel. The barrel is fitted with the distinctive Remington wooden handguard and bayonet lug for a Model 1917 bayonet. The handguard is approximately 15 7/16-inches long with a narrow 5 1/2-inch sight groove on the top and two small rivets at the muzzle end. The bayonet lug is attached to the barrel by three screws. Sling swivels are attached to the magazine and stock. The receiver, barrel, magazine, bayonet lug and sling swivels have the Remington commercial blue finish. The handguard, forearm and stock are straight grain, oil-finished American walnut. The stock has a black hard rubber buttplate with impressed checkering and "REMINGTON/UMC" in a circle in the center. The serial number, "U/165433", is stamped across the bottom of the receiver. "165433" is hand-stamped on the right side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The slide bar is roll-stamped: "TRADE REMINGTON MARK" in one line with "REMINGTON" in script letters. The barrel markings are covered by the handguard. An encircled "REMINGTON/UMC/TRADE MARK" logo is roll-stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger guard. The Ordnance "Shell & Flame" insignia and the "US" property mark are hand-stamped on the left front of the receiver. There are no factory or Ordnance inspection markings on the bayonet lug. The shotgun is complete with a 1918 dated russet leather M1907 sling.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. This rare trench gun retains 85% plus of the original Remington commercial blue finish with only light handling and storage wear. Finish loss is limited to some edge wear on the muzzle, bayonet lug, magazine band, and edges of the receiver. Some dings are visible on the rear handguard retention metal band. The slide bar and lower receiver tang show more finish wear and have a smooth blue-gray patina. The serial numbers and Remington markings are crisp. The Ordnance insignia and U.S. property mark on the left side of the receiver are sharp. The walnut stock and forearm are in very good overall condition and retain much of the oil finish with scattered minor handling and storage marks. This is a solid representative example of a rare World War I U.S. Remington Model 10 Trench Gun.
