Description:

This Model 1903 Sniper Rifle was manufactured by Springfield Armory in late 1917 and was fitted with a Model 1913 Warner & Swasey telescopic sight. Springfield Armory fitted approximately 3,000 M1903 rifles with M1913 W & S telescopic sights between 1913 and 1918. This rifle has the standard receiver markings over serial number "680193" and the barrel is marked: "RIA/Ordnance Shell & Flame/8-18". The barrel is fitted with the standard rear sight with the face of the slide polished, with the 2,750 yard volley notch at the top along with a standard front sight. It has the early, split ring, concave windage and elevation knobs. It is fitted with an early polished, straight handled case hardened bolt with a small "s" on the rear of the bolt handle. It has the standard milled barrel bands, trigger guard and floorplate. It has an "S" style, straight grip walnut stock with two reinforcing bolts, and finger grooves on the sides. The left side is stamped with a faint boxed cartouche, over an "F" stamp with a script circled "P" proof in the pistol grip. The nose of the stock is stamped with a small "s". The left side of the receiver is fitted with a mottled, case hardened mounting bracket designed for the Warner & Swasey scope. It is attached with three screws (incorrect size) that have been restaked on the back sides. The left side of the stock has been inletted to accept the three feet of the mounting bracket. The rifle comes with a Model 1913 W & S telescopic sight, serial number 5393, that has been restamped (spuriously) on the back side of the dovetail with "FOR RIFLE NO. 680193". The scope has the standard black enamel finish and retains the original gray-green rubber eyecup. It comes with a WWI period leather sling with an original leather scope case for the W & S sniper scope, as manufactured and marked on the back side: "DIAMOND D"/"Diamond Company Logo/A.B.D." with an original copy of a Field Manual for the Model 1908 and 1913 Telescopic Musket Sights. U.S. Springfield Model 1903 rifles with Model 1913 W & S telescopic sights were the primary U.S. Army sniper rifles used in WWI.

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled with 80% of an arsenal reparkerized metal finish with blued barrel bands. The right rear side of the receiver has been drilled and tapped for a side mounted target sight, which has been plugged and cold blued over. The stock and handguard are both in fine condition as having been arsenal refurbished/lightly sanded and reoiled. The cartouche and proofs are visible but faint. The W & S sniper scope is in very good condition with nice distinct markings that retains 60% of its original black exterior finish. The optics, like almost all of these scope is fair, viewable but shows lots of specs and delamination of the lens. The leather scope case is very fine with clear markings and intact straps and stitching.
