Description:

This Model 1922 International .22 caliber heavy barrel target rifle was manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1924. This is one of only twelve rifles specially made by Springfield for the U.S. International rifle team for 50 meter off-hand competition using the Model 1922 .22 caliber receiver and bolt. This rifle was part of the LTC William S. Brophy collection and is pictured and extensively described on pages 120-123 of "The Springfield Rifles". The rifle has a 30-inch heavy barrel with Winchester globe front sight on a modified Browning Automatic Rifle base. The underside of the barrel is stamped with the rifle serial number. The barrel is drilled and tapped for scope blocks and fitted with a Lyman Super Target Spot 12 power telescopic sight. The receiver is roll-stamped: "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL OF1922/CAL..22/1930 in six lines and fitted with a Lyman 48C micrometer sight. The Model 1922 style bolt has a modified "speed lock" striker and firing pin. The bolt is polished bright and marked with a large, hand-stamped "NS" on the top of the handle. The rifle has a special U.S.M.C. Waller double set trigger. The trigger is electro-penciled with the serial number on the left side of the magazine well. The serial number indicates the trigger was originally fitted to one of the forty Model 1924, .30 caliber International Match rifles which was not used in competition by the U.S. team. The magazine well is fitted with a Type I U.S.M.C. cork palm rest. The rifle has a oiled walnut International style half stock with beaver-tail forend, checkered pistol grip and aluminum Swiss buttplate. The forearm is in-letted for a Swiss style adjustable sling swivel. The barrel, receiver and trigger guard have the Springfield Armory carbona blue finish. The Model 1922 International .22 Caliber Heavy Barrel Rifle is the rarest and most desirable of all of the Springfield heavy barrel target rifles. In addition to the Brophy collection, this rifle was formerly part of the Peter Cardone and Bob Rosenthal collections.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel and receiver retains 85% plus of the original blue finish. The receiver markings are crisp. The bolt body and handle retain the original armory polished finish with scattered age spotting. The bolt sleeve, headless cocking piece and safety retain 60% of the blue and casehardened finish. The trigger guard has 90% of the blue finish. The stock has been refinished and shows with crisp checkering. The replacement Swiss buttplate is bright with visible machine marks and is in very good condition. This is a well-documented example of an ultra-rare Springfield Model 1922 International .22 Caliber Heavy Barrel Target Rifle. This rifle would be the center-piece of the most advanced collection of Model 1903 rifles.
