Description:

The factory confirms via the included letter that this double rifle was manufactured in 1914 and sold in 1919 to the Calcutta firm of R.B. Rodda, one of the main firearms importers in India at the time. Blue steel chopper lump barrels marked "HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98 NEW BOND STREET, LONDON/WINNER OF ALL THE "FIELD" RIFLE TRIALS, LONDON." on the right and left respectively. Smooth concave rib with raised matted quarter rib at the rear, beaded blade front sight with hood and flip up moon bead and three-leaf (one standing, two folding) rear notch sights graduated from 100 to 300 meters with platinum sighting lines, single extractor, and standard London nitro proofs on the flats. Casehardened side lock action with hand detachable locks, doll's head third fastener, removable firing pin bushings. And gold lined cocking indicators. The receiver and locks are lightly engraved with scroll borders and small flourishes of more intricate scroll. The underside of the receiver is inscribed "CHARGE/75 GRAINS CORDITE/500/465/CASE 3 1/4 INCHES" with dual triggers, and automatic sliding tang safety with gold inlaid "SAFE". Nicely figured walnut checkered pistol grip stock and splinter forearm with Anson push button latch, engraved fittings, blank initial oval, raised cheekpiece, and solid rubber recoil pad. With cloth and leather takedown case with new Holland & Holland interior label, two boxes (five rounds each) Kynoch .500/465 ammunition, three-piece cleaning rod, cleaning rod heads, extra front sight hood, and sling swivels. Stock measurements are: drop at comb 1 3/4 inches; drop at heel 2 3/4 inches; length of pull 14 1/2 inches; weight 11 lbs 1 oz.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% original blue finish on the barrels, some areas of minor edge wear, surface scratches, and light oxidation on the bright muzzles. The receiver and locks have about half of the original muted case colors with crisp markings and engraving, attractive gray patina on the balance, and light wear on the tangs. The wood is fine with crisp checkering, small dings, some very small chips on the forearm edges, small fill and surface crack on the right side of the butt, and period replacement recoil pad and spacer. Mechanically excellent. Case is fine with scuffs and age cracking on the leather, storage marks overall, and some interior staining and tears.
