Documented Winchester Experimental Model 78 Junior Target Bolt Action Rifle Formerly of the Winchester Museum Collection

The accompanying Winchester Gun Museum letter addressed to noted firearms collector Norm Flayderman lists this unusual rifle as "a sample model" of a bolt action Junior Target Model 78 which was received at the Winchester Museum on November 11, 1949. The included Winchester-Western letter (copy) addressed to noted Winchester collector Peter Murray confirms that this rifle was among 24 firearms formerly of the Winchester Museum collection and describes the rifle as a "one of a kind" and "very much like the Model 75 target rifle but with many unique features." The left side of the barrel at the breech is marked with the bore diameter ".217." The left side of the barrel and receiver at the breech are stamped with a Winchester factory oval proof. These are the only visible markings on the rifle that has a combination of features from the Models 69 and 75. It is fitted with a globe front peep sight, scope blocks on the barrel, and Lyman receiver peep sight. The smooth pistol grip stock has a checkered steel buttplate, and the forearm has an adjustable hand guard and sling swivel. This gun was received from Winchester by Norm Flayderman as partial payment for his appraisal before the Winchester Museum was transferred to Cody. It is listed in his catalog 99 at number 1253 and is considered to be the only Model 78 in existence. Formerly from the Peter and Patty Murray Collection.

ConditionExcellent overall, retaining 99% plus original blue finish with some scattered minor handling marks throughout. Mechanically excellent.
