This Springfield Model 1903A1 rifle was manufactured in 1934 and fitted with a surplus U.S.M.C. 8 power Unertl sniper scope serial number 2588. The rifle has a replacement SA barrel dated "6-39". The muzzle is stamped with the star gauge mark found on National Match (NM) rifles, but the barrel lacks the NM star gauge number beneath the handguard. The receiver and bolt lack the additional gas port holes added by the Marine Corps to rifles manufactured prior to 1935. The bolt has been collector polished and electro-penciled with the rifle serial number. The left side of the stock is stamped with a post WWII "S.A." open box rebuild mark, and the stock lacks the serial number stamped on the underside ahead sling swivel on NM rifles. The barrel and receiver are fitted with Unertl scope blocks. The rear block is located 1/4-inch behind the rear sight base. The pre-war handguard has been modified to accept Unertl target mounts; the handguard modifications do not conform to the pattern found on genuine U.S.M.C. M1903A1 sniper rifles. The U.S.M.C. Unertl telescopic sight has the standard commercial blue finish and is roll stamped: "J. UNERTL/USMC-SNIPER/2588". The scope has fine wire crosshairs and the screw-on steel lens caps. The scope has bronze finished, Unertl target mounts of the same pattern furnished with U.S.M.C. sniper scopes and is complete with the scarce Micarta scope can issued with Unertl sniper scopes.

Very fine as converted to current configuration. The rifle has been modified to resemble a M1903A1 NM rifle and collector fitted with an excellent original U.S.M.C. Unertl sniper scope and Micarta can. The barrel and receiver have 95% of the armory parkerized finish. The bolt has been collector polished. The stock and handguard have been refinished and are in very good overall condition. The scope retains 98% of the original blue finish. The optics are clear.
