Description:

This is an early Model 1941 Johnson Semi-Automatic rifle as manufactured by the Cranston Arms Company. Subsequent to the fall of the Dutch East Indies to Japan in 1942, some of the Dutch contract rifles that were not shipped overseas were obtained by the Marine Corps and issued to the Marine Parachute and Raider Battalions for use in the South Pacific island hopping campaign in 1943. These rifles have several unique features such as a 10 round rotary magazine, a recoiling barrel which started the cycling of the rifle and a takedown feature that allowed the barrel to be easily removed and stored in a parachute jump bag for the Para Marines, a two-piece walnut stock, and a one piece cast receiver with a perforated front section that acts as a barrel heat shield. The top of the receiver has the Johnson patent numbers followed by "CAL. 30-06 SEMI-AUTO/"JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"/MODEL OF 1941/MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A." over the serial number with no letter prefix. The right rear receiver side has a five-pointed star above "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO." in an inverted triangle. The tangent rear sight is correctly graduated in meters. The barrel is marked ".30-06/41" on the front face of the collar and "J.A./30-06" on the rear of the barrel over the chamber. With an original Johnson bayonet and original leather scabbard that is stamped "8796" and the bayonet ring is stamped "2635".

Rating Definition:

Very good with 85% of the original wartime finish with the barrel and rear sight having an original light blued finish with a green parkerized finish on the receiver. The bolt has the correct in the white finish. The two-piece stock and forend, both have a dark brown oil finish with minor handling marks and scratches overall. The bayonet retains 90% plus of its original dark green finish with the scabbard in very good condition with some oil staining on the lower section and tight stitching overall. Mechanically excellent.
