Description:

This is a representative example of a restored "Gas Trap" M1 Garand Semi-Automatic Rifle. An early iteration, the majority of the features that would be seen on the full production Garand were in place with the exception of the gas system; a gas trap, a small extension mounted at the end of the muzzle, captured gases as they were escaping to drive them into the long piston assembly to cycle the bolt, was used in place of the port system that would become the de-facto standard for gas operated weapons. While the gas trap had a number of issues, it was an important developmental step from bolt action weapons to the semi-automatic "battle rifle" that would dominate mid-20th Century warfare. Blade front and adjustable peep rear sights, with the stainless steel gas trap/cylinder assembly serving also as the front sight base and a "BATTLE RANGE" marked elevation adjustment knob. The right side of the barrel is marked with "P" and "X" stamps, and the interior of the receiver shows welds consistent with the alteration to correct early Garand stoppage issues. Components are marked as follows; front sight: B 8882, muzzle device: B8876, reproduction gas cylinder: D 28289, forearm: C46006, op rod (uncut, with early "square wire" spring): D 35382- 0, bolt: D 28287/-1/J3B, rear sight cover: B-8872 ,trigger guard: C 46025, housing: D 28290, hammer: C 46008, safety: C-46015, follower arm: B8869, receiver leg: D 28291. The stock is marked with "P" and "S.A./S.P.G." inspection marks, with a brown leather sling and a checkered buttplate with no compartment door. and a Defense Eagle, the breechblock is marked "D 28287/-1/J3B", "C 46025" on the bottom of the trigger guard, "D 28290" on the housing, "C 46008-1" on the hammer, "C 46015-4" on the safety, and a Springfield operating rod. Smooth pistol grip stock, with a "S.A./S.P.G." cartouche on the left side and a solid checkered steel buttplate with no compartment door.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally restored to Gas Trap specifications. The reparkerized receiver shows some mild pitting, with a mixed dark blue/brown tone to the operating rod and some areas of the barrel. The gas cylinder shows typical bright wear over half the surface and strong dark black color on the remainder. The lower band pin is absent. The stock is very good, a later model with a routed-out tool compartment, showing some mild dings and scratches along with fine grain. The sling is good with mild cracks and scuffs. Mechanically excellent.
