Very Fine Cased Pryse Patent Double Action Revolver

Charles Pryse began his career as a gunmaker in Birmingham in 1838 and remained active until 1883. Thereafter, his sons continued as gunmakers until around 1904. This revolver is based on Prye's patent #4421 from 1876 for a double action, automatically extracting, top break revolver with a rebounding hammer. The latter is a particularly important aspect as it allowed the revolver to be more safely carried with a fully loaded cylinder. The design also incorporates a mechanism to secure the cylinder. Webley manufactured the design starting in 1877 as the "Webley-Pryse No. 4" and thus launched their long line of top break revolvers. This revolver has fixed blade and notch sights, "BRITISH ARMY & NAVY REVOLVER (PRYSE PATENT)" on top, "PRYSE S/PATENT" and "FIRST/QUALITY" on the left side of the frame, "PATENT/1071" in a diamond on the right side of the frame, "2626" on the back of the cylinder and bottom of the barrel, a flat top checkered grip, and a lanyard ring stud on the butt. It comes with a hardwood case with a Richard Burnand retailer label inside the lid, an empty cartridge block, lanyard ring in the compartment, screwdriver, cleaning rod, and oiler. Lanyard ring missing.

ConditionVery fine with 80% plus bright high polish original blue finish, strong original niter blue on the hammer and trigger, distinct markings, mix of gray and brown patina on the flaked and worn areas, minimal light spotting, and general minor wear. The grip is also very fine and has crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are very good and mostly have minor age and storage related wear.
