Description:

There were only approximately 60 Wiard rifles manufactured in 1861-1862 at O'Donnell's Foundry in New York City from cast "semi-steel." Only 20 of the 12-pounders were produced, and around 13 survive of which only three are reported in private hands. This one is numbered "4" above the right trunnion. Relatively little is known about these scarce artillery pieces in actual combat, but the 6-pounders had an incredibly effective range of up to 7,000 yards and some of both sizes are reported to have been used by Major General Daniel Sickles' "Excelsior Brigade." It is marked "NW/NYC/OF" on the right trunnion, "1861" on the left trunnion, "U.S./N. WIARD" on top, "1175 lbs" to the rear of the vent, "L.R." on the muzzle, and another unclear marking at the bottom of the muzzle. It is mounted on a Paulson Bros. Ordnance Corp. carriage.

Rating Definition:

Very good with black painted finish, moderate pitting, and mild wear on the carriage.
