Fine Massachusetts Arms Co. British Contract Greene Patent Breech Loading Percussion Carbine

Only 2,000 Greene carbines were manufactured by the Mass. Arms Co. in the mid-1850s for the British for use in the Crimean War. All but a few hundred reportedly being scrapped for parts later, with few seeing actual military service. They differ from the American type in the larger caliber, with the use of Queen Victoria's "St. Edward's Crown/VxR" cipher behind the hammer on the lock, the British proofmarks, shorter barrel, hexadecagonal section ahead of the rear sight, sling ring on the lower tang, and the use of steel for the buttplate and patch box instead of brass. This example has standard markings and features including a "1" cartouche on the buttstock and "sold out of service" mark on the barrel.

ConditionFine, retains 40% original thinned blue finish and faint traces of original case colors with the balance mostly a grey patina and some scattered patches of light pitting concentrated mainly on the left of the barrel, patch box, and buttplate. The wood is also fine with some minor dings and scratches, and a minor chip on the right near the lower tang. Mechanically excellent.
