Historic Documented Civil War Burnside 5th Model Breech Loading Percussion Carbine Identified as Issued to Private Charles Gammel, Co. B, 11th N.Y. Vol. Cavalry with Related Publications

Manufactured c. 1863 with standard markings and features. Also includes "Carl the Cavalry Boy: His Recollections of the Rebellion" by Charles Gammel (limited edition signed by his brother George W. Gammel, copy 22 of 50, Christmas 1907), "Scott's 900: The Story of a Regiment" (Abridged, Annotated) by Thomas West Smith, the magazine "U.S. Martial Arms Collector and Springfield Research Newsletter" from March 2019 with this carbine on the cover and an article about the carbine within stating it was issued to Private Charles Gammel of Company B of the 11th New York Volunteer Cavalry and showing period records listing the carbine by serial number as issued to Gammel, and copies of documents from the National Archives relating to Private Gammel. B Company was primarily raised in New York City. The regiment left New York on May 5, 1862, and served first in the Military District of Washington. They were then in the Department of the Gulf starting on March 14, 1864, and finally the Department of the Cumberland beginning in March 1865. The men began mustering out in late July 1865, and the remaining men were mustered out and honorably discharged at the end of September in Memphis, Tennessee. They first saw action at Blue Ridge Mountain, Virginia, and then Companies B and C fought Stuart's advance guard near Fairfax Court House, Virginia, and lost four men killed plus 74 enlisted men and four officers captured, including many wounded men. They succeeded in delaying Stuart for half a day. By the end of the war, they lost 10 enlisted men killed in action, 1 officer and 14 enlisted men from wounds received in action, and 3 officers and 319 enlisted men due to disease and other causes. A significant number of the latter losses occurred due to the loss of the transport steamer North American in the Atlantic on December 22, 1864. The steamer was carrying 203 sick, furloughed and discharged soldiers; 12 cabin passengers, and a crew of 44 men per news reports and was travelling from New Orleans to New York City. The ship took on water and it and 197 lives were lost at sea.

ConditionGood with mostly gray and brown patina, some minor pitting, and some fading of the markings. The wood is good as refinished and has outlines of the cartouches, some gaps at the edges, chipping along the edges of the butt, some absent slivers and divots, a repaired crack in the comb, and a series of small holes on the lower left of the butt. Mechanically fine. It is very difficult to find Civil War carbines documented as used by particularly cavalrymen, let alone a carbine by a cavalryman whose experiences during the war were published by his family after his death.
