Sharps Model 1874 rifles are famous for their use on the plains of the West for big game hunting, but they were also popular with sportsmen in the East and West for long range target competition. One of Sharps' advertisements noted that the Amateur Club Medal at Creedmoor had been won three times with Sharps rifles and held the best record at the range with 81 out of a possible 84 points. The Long Range Rifles were manufactured in four main variations (1-4) to fill the latter role, and only 429 were manufactured in total compared to 6,001 of the Model 1874 Sporting Rifles. This rifle most closely matches the Long Range No. 2 specifications but also has the spirit level on the front sight which was standard on the No. 1s and not the 2s. Only 29 No. 2s were manufactured at Hartford, and only 258 No. 2s were manufactured in total (see page 226 of "Sharps Firearms" by Frank Sellers). It features a windgauge globe front sight with spirit level, "SHARPS RIFLE CO. HARTFORD CONN" and "CALIBRE 44" (.44-90 2 5/8 bottleneck was standard initially) on the top of the barrel, the matching serial number on the bottom of the barrel and inside the forearm as well as the left side of the long range Vernier peep sight's base and on the upper tang under the sight ("4" not visible due to sight mounting), "SHARPS RIFLE CO/PAT APR 6 1869" on the left side of the frame, knurled single trigger, checkered Schnabel style forearm and pistol grip stock, and a thin steel shotgun buttplate with fine checkering.
