Description:

The Model Number One 1st Issue revolver was manufactured by Smith & Wesson from 1857 to 1860 in six various types. This particular revolver is a 6th type, the final change that eliminated the rotating plate and a ratchet was made a part of the cylinder. The revolver features a factory floral scroll engraving by Richard Bates Inshaw on the sides of the barrel and frame. The cylinder and back strap are engraved with a simple vine and leaf pattern. Both grip panels are numbered to the gun. Matching assembly marks are on the grip frame, barrel, and cylinder. Comes with a rare and very desirable S&W Model Number One revolver gutta percha case. The exterior has the likeness of a Model Number One First Issue, several smaller renditions of the same as borders, scroll designs, and "MANUFACTURED ONLY BY/SMITH & WESSON,/SPRINGFIELD MASSACHUSETTS." The interior has fancy scroll patterns on the lid lining and a cartridge block holding 56 rounds.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 70% original blue finish thinning to a brown, and the cylinder has a smooth gray patina. 97% original silver plating remains on the frame. The engraving is crisp. The grips are very good with a couple chips absent and minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with a repair on a short lid side and typical high spot wear on the lining. These cases were built from fragile material and the survivability rate is therefore very low. These cases are rarely encountered in any condition. An extremely rare R.B. Inshaw factory engraved Model One First Issue, among the great rarities in Smith & Wesson collecting! Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
